世界文化遺産/国宝/重要文化財/栃木県日光市 ____________________________________________________ Taiyuin is the mausoleum of Tokugawa Iemitsu, the third shogun of the Edo Shogunate, located in Nikko City, Tochigi Prefecture. Adjacent to Nikko Toshogu Shrine, where his grandfather, the first shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu, rests, both are World Heritage Sites. The name "Taiyuin" is a posthumous title given to Iemitsu by Emperor Gokomyo. Iemitsu, who deeply respected his grandfather Ieyasu, died at Edo Castle at the age of 48, declaring in his last will and testament, "Even after my death, my soul shall rest in the mountains of Nikko, and I shall serve the Lord Toshateru by his side. In 1651, the fourth shogun, Tokugawa Ietsuna, followed the will of his father, Iemitsu, and took his remains to Nikko, where he buried them in Mt. Daikoku next to Jigen-do, where the great priest Tenkai was buried, and began construction of the Taiyuin. Since Ietsuna was only 11 years old at the time, his uncle Hoshina Masayuki, feudal lord of Aizu, Sakai Tadakatsu, and other shogunate officials whom Iemitsu had appointed during his lifetime took the lead in the construction. Taiyuin was completed in April 1653 after a rush of work that took one year and two months. In accordance with Iemitsu's will, it is less gorgeous than Nikko Toshogu, but it creates an ethereal atmosphere. In addition, the Taiyuin stands as if facing and watching over Nikko Toshogu, showing Iemitsu's respect for Ieyasu. The main hall, phase room, and worship hall are national treasures, and there are many highlights such as the magnificent Nitenmon Gate and Kokamon Gate. The Taiyuin, called the "hidden depths of Nikkozan," preserves the appearance of Nikkozan as it was during the period of the syncretism of Shintoism and Buddhism. Starting from the Niomon Gate and ending at the Koukamon Gate, the path leading through six large and small gates will make you feel as if you are ascending to heaven. In the Edo period, commoners were not allowed to worship here, and there was a rule that feudal lords with less than 100,000 koku should go up to Nitenmon Gate. The armor worn by Iemitsu and a seated statue of him are enshrined in the main hall, while successive shoguns sat in the worship hall and made pilgrimages. The worship hall is adorned with a magnificent Chinese lion painted by the Kano school and 140 dragon paintings on the ceiling. While Nikko Toshogu Shrine is in the Gongen-zukuri style of Shinto and Buddhist architecture, Taiyuin is in the Butsuden-zukuri style, which follows the Gongen-zukuri style. Therefore, when Shinto and Buddhism were separated in the Meiji era, Nikko Toshosha became Toshogu as a Shinto shrine, and Taiyuin remains to this day as a temple(Nikkozan Rinnoji Temple).
