The Midland Grand Hotel was originally built in 1873 as part of St Pancras station by George Gilbert Scott. Closed in 1935, it was turned into offices and then fell into disuse. The St Pancras Renaissance Hotel's remarkable Gothic Revival architecture was meticulously restored to its former glory during renovations in 2011. Its grand staircase features impressive high ceilings alongside original stained-glass windows and elaborate plasterwork. The staircase, named one of the "25 Most Beautiful Staircases in the World" by Conde Nast Traveler in 2018, is also known for being used as a filming location for several movies and music videos, including the Spice Girls' music video for their hit single 'Wannabe' in 1996. The play we went to see was ‘The Motive and the Cue’ at the Noël Coward Theatre The play, written by Jack Thorne and directed by Sam Mendes, focused on the tempestuous 1964 Broadway production of Hamlet, which starred Richard Burton and was directed by Sir John Gielgud. Elizabeth Taylor, as Burton's newlywed wife, was a central character in the play, offering a glimpse into their marriage and the collision of art, celebrity and ego.
