🗺️ Field Notes 📌 Brief Wander Details: Join me for a wander through Bingin Beach, Uluwatu, where we explore the dramatic cliffside changes reshaping this iconic spot. Look around freely, and witness the reality of what’s happening along these cliffs. 📍 Start Point: (What3Words) handled.viewings.articles 🗓️ Walk Recorded On: 31st August 2025 🏜️ Terrain: Rubble and sand 🏔️ Max altitude: 67 meters above sea level 📏 Distance: 0.7miles ⏳ Estimated Time: 40 minutes, but allow time for a dip 🔥 Difficulty: Moderate, Hard 🌡 Temperature: 37°C 🌦️ Weather: Very hot and sunny 🥾 Recommended Footwear: Trainers or hiking boots 🎥 Equipment Used: Insta360 X3 | DJI Mic Mini 📌 Wander Diary: Bingin Beach felt like one of those places that wraps itself around your heart… A cliffside full of colour, surf energy, warungs tucked into the rock, and families who’ve built their lives on the edge of the blue. When I first moved to Bali a year ago, this was one of the very first spots I visited, and have returned to many times since. Back then, it felt like a promise… a new beginning… a place that said, “You’re exactly where you’re meant to be.” Coming back here today though, after our summer travels, I wasn’t prepared for what I’d find! Whole sections of the cliff have been cut open, torn apart, and left in broken layers of rubble! Homes are gone. Businesses that once fed surfers and travellers have vanished. And there’s a heaviness in the air, the kind that makes you stop speaking mid-sentence because you’re not sure what words belong to the moment! There are rumours floating around about investors and development projects. The kind of stories that get whispered from person to person, each one slightly different. And in the video, I express my frustration about money and how it allows people to do what they want! I find it incredibly sad what's happened here, however, I want to tread lightly… I don’t know the full truth, and I’m not here to point fingers or pretend I understand the politics behind it all! And even if I did, it’s none of my business! This walk is simply me witnessing change… the heartbreaking, complicated kind, and sharing it honestly with you. Bingin Beach was one of the first places that made me fall in love with Bali, and seeing it like this hit me in a way I didn’t expect. If you’ve ever visited Bingin… if you love Uluwatu… if Bali has ever held a chapter of your story… or if you’re just curious about what’s happening along these cliffs, I hope this walk speaks to you. This video captures Bingin Beach as it is today, the beauty, the destruction, the questions, the memories, and the reality of rapid development in Bali. If you enjoyed this little wander, please do give the video a like and consider subscribing to the channel, it really does help me keep sharing these quiet adventures with you. A small gesture on your end, but a big boost on mine 🙏🏼 And if you, or someone you care about, is having a tough time lately, please know you’re not alone… Life can be a bit of a rugged trail now and then… but there's always a way through, even if it’s just one careful step at a time. You’ll find me on Instagram, if you'd like to follow along, or drop me a message for a chat… I’m always happy to hear from fellow wanderers and others who may need a friend! Because the cliffs are so steep, there has never been easy road access, most structures below the cliff were only reachable on foot via narrow stairways. Over decades, the settlement has grown organically from simple surf shacks to a dense mix of surf shops, restaurants, guesthouses, and small hotels. In recent years (2020s), Bingin’s cliff-top land became a hot real-estate zone, attracting foreign and local investment, especially for cliff-front villas. In July 2025, authorities began a major demolition operation, targeting more than 40 cliffside buildings, after ruling many of the structures were built without the proper permits and violated spatial-planning and coastal protection laws. The demolitions ignited a strong community and cultural pushback, with many locals lamenting the erasure of a surf-heritage space. Critics of the demolition warn that overdevelopment, especially without proper planning, threatens to destroy the very character that made Bingin popular in the first place. It's raw surf-village feel, the cliff-warungs, and the intimate, tucked-away charm.
