FIRST TEST FLIGHT ON 5 DEC 2023 AFTER 21 YEARS After 21 years the replica of Charles Kingsford Smiths Fokker Tri-Motor Southern Cross took to the sky over Shellharbour on 5 Dec 2023 for its very first test flight from the HARS Aviation Museum premises located at the Shellharbour Airport , Albion Park Rail, NSW Australia. The replica Fokker Tri-Motor was badly damaged during a landing in Adelaide, South Australia 21 years ago. The Fokker Tri-Motor undertook a number of circuits around the Shellharbour area testing the aircraft out with some touch and go landings and some stall testing. For approximately 8 years I have been lucky enough to be able to witness the dedicated engineers and volunteers at HARS ( Historical Aircraft Restoration Society ) restore the aircraft to its fully operational flying state. To watch Jim Thurston and his team over the years pull the aircraft “apart “ into its main components then fastidiously put it back together has been amazing. The three radial engines have been completely rebuilt and tested along with the split and damaged wing being rebuilt with special types of timber special fabrics and glues. They also undertook complete upgrade of the avionics systems and new wiring throughout the aircraft. The very famous Australian aviator Mr Dick Smith has chiefly funded the restoration project with many other donors. It will be great to see it flying for many years to come.
