Bruce Campbell has been regarded for decades as the king of B list movies. This retrospective will delve through his career through the decades. Bruce Campbell was born in Michigan on June 22, 1958. His mom Joanne Louise was a homemaker and his father Charles Newton Campbell worked in advertising for many years, later teaching in different colleges as an adjunct professor, and was also an actor and director in local theatres. This kinda goes to show that acting was most probably already in his family and he might have even gotten the acting bug from his dad. Campbell’s acting began as a teenager making short super 8 movies with future famous director Sam Raimi, whom at the time was just a regular teenager like Bruce. They were attending Wylie E. Groves Highschool together. And If you don’t know who Sam Raimi is, well he is a filmmaker best known for creating the cult horror Evil Dead series. He also directed the Spider-man Trilogy and is known for producing TV shows such as Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and its spin-off Xena: Warrior Princess. During Bruce Campbell’s college years Campbell and Raimi collaborated on a 30-minute Super 8 horror flick entitled “Within The Woods”. This movie is very similar to the original Evil dead and features a two teenage couples who decide to spend the weekend together in a remote cabin in the woods. An evil force starts to stalk them, possessing the teenagers and making everyone kill one another. The movie is starring Bruce Campbell and was made in order to attract initial investors. Through the development of this short movie Raimi was introduced to the writings of HP Lovecraft’s and more specifically the concept of the “Book of The Dead”. This book is called the Necronomicon and formed the basis for the Evil Dead Franchise. “Within The Woods” didn’t show the book of the dead but had for premise an indian burial ground where the teenagers were attacked by demonic spirits. The short movie was never officially distributed but was screened at a local theatre which garnered a bit of interest from one of its local newspapers called The Detroit News. The ran an article about it but that wasn’t really enough to get them the budget to create a proper sequel. Raimi at the time wanted to produce a feature version of the film but realized that he neede 150K to do so. He approached a lawyer and was unimpressed but nevertheless offered him some advice on how to approach investors. By following it, Raimi managed to come up with 90k and he started production with the money that he had, figuring out that he could get the rest of the investment later. This was the beginning of the Evil dead franchise, and the rise to fame of Bruce Campbell and Sam Raimi. For this 1st Evil dead maovie, Cambell starred in it, did camera work for it, and received an executive producer for it too. Whereas Raimi wrote, directed, and edited it. A cool note about this feature is that Rob Tapert, a fellow Michigander just like Raimi and Campbell, went on to becoming a producer involved in most Raimi/Campbell production and including successful series such as Young Hercules, Hercules and Xena Warrior Princess. From 2008 to 2013 Bruce Campbell became part of the main cast of “Burn Notice”. The title of the series refers to the burn notices that are given out by intelligence agencies to discredit or announce the dismissal of agents who are considered unreliable. Think of it how John Wick gets attacked from all corners of the world because a bounty is set on him. It’s not as extreme in this series, but getting a burn notice means that a spy’s connection to an espionage agency is terminated, leaving them without cash or influence thus resulting in no identity. In this series Bruce Campbell plays an aging, semi-retired covert operative and former Navy seal low on cash named Sam. In order to stay afloat he sleep with many older Miami Women in exchange for food or shelter. In 2015 Bruce Campbell reprised his role of Ash William for “Ash Vs. The Evil Dead”. If you’re a fan of the Evil dead franchise like me you must have been jumping up and down through the roof. The series is set more or less 30 years after the events in the Evil Dead saga. During that time Ash kept on working in the supermarket business and works as a stock boy for a shop called the “Value Stop”. There here works with a firend Pablo and his girlfriend, Kelly. In this sequel series, Ash hasn’t done much with himself in the events after his time travel adventure in the 1300s that occurred in Evil Dead: Army of Darkness. #brucecampbell #evildead #armyofdarkness
