Autism can look different for everyone, and many adults go undiagnosed for years, myself included! So here are some lesser-known signs that might make you go, “Ohhh… that explains a lot!” Sensory Overload – No, you’re not just “sensitive.” Bright lights, loud noises, or even certain textures can be overwhelming and exhausting. Sensory-Seeking Behaviors – On the flip side, some autistic adults crave strong sensory input, like heavy blankets, deep pressure, or blasting music. Trouble with Small Talk – Making casual conversation feels like performing an entire Broadway show… without a script! Deep Focus on Special Interests – When you love something, you really love it. Hours can fly by while researching your favorite topic, and you could probably give a TED Talk on it. Burnout from Socializing – Hanging out is fun… until it’s not. Social events can drain your energy fast, leaving you in need of serious recovery time. Feeling Like an Alien – Always feeling like you’re on the outside looking in? Like there’s a secret rulebook to life that everyone else got except you? Struggling with Eye Contact – Some autistic adults avoid eye contact because it feels super intense, while others overcompensate and stare too much. Masking – This is when you consciously or unconsciously mimic neurotypical behaviors to “fit in.” Spoiler alert: It’s exhausting! Rigid Routines – Plans changing last minute? No thanks! Having a set routine helps you feel more in control. Difficulty Processing Verbal Instructions – “Can you just do this, then that, then this other thing?” Nope. If there are too many steps, it’s like my brain just... crashes. Intense Empathy (Or Not at All) – Some autistic people feel emotions so deeply it’s overwhelming, while others struggle to interpret emotions at all. Face Blindness – Ever struggle to recognize someone out of context? Like, “Oh hey… person I definitely remember… from somewhere?” Stimming – This could be tapping, rocking, twirling hair, or repeating words. It’s soothing and helps regulate emotions! Struggling with Indirect Language – “Read between the lines.” Um, what lines?! Just say what you mean! Unusual Speech Patterns – Maybe you talk too fast, too slow, or with a unique cadence that people notice. Overthinking Social Interactions. Did I say the wrong thing? Were they annoyed? Why did they say “K” instead of “Okay”? The post-conversation analysis never ends. Difficulty with Transitions – Going from one activity to another feels like trying to shift gears without a clutch. Food Texture Sensitivities – If certain foods make you gag, you’re not just picky—it’s a legit sensory issue. Difficulty Recognizing Hunger/Fullness – Some autistic people forget to eat, while others eat because they should, not because they’re hungry. Being an Absolute Legend at Hyperfocus – When something interests you, you can work for hours without even noticing time passing. Productivity mode: activated! So, how many of these resonated with you? Autism is a spectrum, and everyone’s experience is different. If some of these signs sound familiar, you’re not alone!
