If any of these signs sound like you, you might just have found a missing puzzle piece in your life. 1: Social Exhaustion & Masking You ever hang out with people, and afterward, you feel like you just ran a marathon… with your brain? That’s because a lot of autistic people mask, meaning we copy social behaviors to fit in. It’s like acting in a play where everyone else has the script, but you’re making it up as you go. And it is exhausting. If you find socializing draining, or you feel like you’re a different person in different settings, this could be a big clue. 2: Sensory Sensitivities Loud noises, bright lights, certain textures, do any of these make you want to scream (or actually make you scream)? Sensory sensitivities are a HUGE part of autism. Maybe you hate the feeling of certain fabrics, or maybe the sound of someone chewing makes you want to leave the planet. On the flip side, some autistic people seek out sensory input, like loving deep pressure, certain textures, or repetitive sounds. 3: Special Interests (a.k.a. Hyperfixations) Okay, let’s be real. Have you ever gone so deep into a topic that you know more than any normal person should? Like, you casually know everything about 18th-century shipbuilding, or you can list every Pokémon by number? Autistic people often have special interests, which are basically passions we go ALL IN on. And no, it’s not “just a hobby," it’s a core part of our personality. 4: Difficulty with Small Talk “Hey, how are you?” Uhhh... If small talk feels like an impossible side quest, you’re not alone. Many autistic people struggle with surface-level conversation because… what’s the point?! We’d rather dive straight into deep, meaningful topics like the mysteries of space or the best way to make a grilled cheese, than talk about the weather. 5: Rigid Routines & Struggles with Change Do you have a routine that, if disrupted, completely throws you off? Like, you always take the same route to work, or you eat the same breakfast every day? Autistic brains thrive on predictability. Change, especially unexpected change can cause serious stress. If switching up plans last minute makes you panic, this might be a sign. 6: Feeling Like an ‘Alien’ in Social Situations You ever feel like you missed some secret lesson on how to be a person? Maybe social rules confuse you, or you struggle to read between the lines when people are being indirect. Autistic people often feel like outsiders, trying to decode a world that seems to come naturally to others. If you’ve ever felt like you’re “faking” being normal… yeah, same. 7: Unusual Communication Style Do people say you talk too much about your interests? Or maybe too little? Do you accidentally interrupt, struggle with eye contact, or have a flat tone when you’re not actually bored? Autistic people communicate differently. Some of us info-dump about our passions, while others prefer to listen. There’s no wrong way to communicate, just different ways! 8: Struggles with Executive Function Do you ever sit down to start a task, and then… two hours later, you’re still thinking about starting? Executive dysfunction is like having a car but forgetting how to turn the key. Tasks like cleaning, answering emails, or even eating can feel overwhelming, not because we’re lazy, but because our brains struggle with task initiation, transitions, and prioritization. 9: Strong Sense of Justice You ever get really frustrated when people don’t follow the rules? Or feel a deep need for fairness? Many autistic people have a strong sense of justice, whether it’s calling out hypocrisy, standing up for what’s right, or just needing things to make sense. 10: Burnout & Shutdowns If life feels like it’s constantly too much, and you go through periods of exhaustion where you can’t function, you might be experiencing autistic burnout. This happens when we mask too much or push past our limits for too long. It’s like your brain hitting a hard reset. So, did any of these signs sound familiar? If so, you’re not alone. Many people go years without realizing they’re autistic, especially if they don’t fit the outdated stereotypes. Self-discovery is powerful, and whether you pursue a diagnosis or not, understanding yourself is what truly matters.
