Welcome to Lent & Learn at the Episcopal Church of the Holy Apostles (Hoover, Alabama). In Week 3, our Rector, the Rev. Seth Olson explores How to Give Like an Episcopalian—a grace-first, fear-free approach to generosity shaped by the Holy Eucharist (also known as the Great Thanksgiving) and rooted in God’s abundance. Many of us carry baggage around money and church: confusion, hesitation, anxiety, cynicism, or even resentment. This session is not about pressure, “dues,” or earning God’s love. Instead, it reframes giving as a spiritual practice of trust—a way of responding to God’s gifts with gratitude and participating in God’s mission in the world through sharing our time, talent, and treasure (wisdom, works, and wealth). A central theme of this teaching is the Eucharistic shape of giving: we offer what we have, and God takes, blesses, transforms, and gives our gifts for the life of the world. From that foundation, we explore practical steps toward proportional, sacrificial, and first-fruits giving, always with an invitational posture and zero shame. In this video, you’ll learn: -What stewardship means in the Episcopal tradition (and what it doesn’t) -How giving becomes a practice of freedom from fear -Why pledging is discernment—not a contract or a membership fee -How to move from scarcity (fear/control) to abundance (trust/gratitude) -Practical ways to take one next step in generosity (time, talent, and treasure) Scripture referenced (discussed and paraphrased): Mark 12:41–44 (The Widow’s Offering) 2 Corinthians 9:6–15 (Grace abounding and generosity overflowing) Whether you’re new to church, returning to faith, or healing from past experiences around money and religion, you’re welcome here.
