Welcome to Lent & Learn at the Episcopal Church of the Holy Apostles (Hoover, Alabama). In this Week 2 session, Fr. Seth explores how to read the Bible like an Episcopalian—with seriousness, curiosity, and a Jesus-centered lens. Many Christians are taught to approach Scripture in only one way: as a literal rulebook, as a source of “nice sayings,” or as something too confusing to engage at all. In the Episcopal tradition, we take a different path: We take the Bible so seriously that we don’t only take it literally. We read with attention to genre, context, community, and prayer—trusting that Holy Scripture contains all things necessary for salvation, while also honoring the reality that these texts were written by human beings and received by the Church through time. Because pacing was a bit tight in this session, we did not have time for in-room discussion or a full Lectio Divina practice—however, Fr. Seth introduces what Lectio Divina is, offers reflection questions throughout, and invites you (and your household) to pause the video to talk, journal, or pray as you go. In this video, you’ll learn: What Episcopalians mean when we call the Bible “the Word of God” Why reading Scripture in community matters (and why going it alone can get us into trouble) How genre and context shape interpretation (Gospels, poetry, wisdom, letters, and more) Why prayerful reading is about heart + curiosity, not certainty or fear What Lectio Divina is and how it can become a simple, life-giving practice Reflection questions (pause and respond): When you hear someone say “I believe the Bible,” what do you think they mean? What has shaped how you read the Bible (for better or worse)? Where do you long for God to speak to you right now? What happens when we read Scripture through the life, teaching, death, and resurrection of Jesus? If you’re new to the Episcopal Church, returning to faith, or simply looking for a healthier way to engage Scripture, you’re in the right place. You belong here.
