The Man Born Blind: Story Summary and Meaning

Jesus healed many people of blindness in the gospels, but one story in particular stands out in the Gospel of John chapter 9. A Summary of the Man Born Blind Bible Story Jesus met a man blind from birth. His disciples asked if the blindness was caused by the man's sin or the sins of his parents. Jesus replied "neither" and healed the man by mixing spit and clay from the ground and rubbing it on the man's eyes. He sent the man to wash himself and he is able to see. People who knew the man were in disbelief. They wanted to know where to find the person who healed him. They took him to the Pharisees who became angry that Jesus healed on the sabbath. The Pharisees questioned the man, who claimed Jesus was a prophet. They questioned the man's parents, who were afraid make any claim and told them to ask their son instead. They questioned the man again, but were so angry with the answers they threw him out. Jesus found the man and revealed himself as the Son of Man. He explained that he was sent so that those who are blind may see and those who see may become blind. The Meaning of the Man Born Blind Story 1. Sin does not cause disability. People wanted to blame the man or his parents for his blindness, but a disability is no one's fault. In fact, Jesus explained that it was through the disability that God would be revealed. 2. Are you blind? We are often mentally blinded by sin. Even though we can physically see, we see with judgment, pride, and anger. Let the Lord remove the sin and see the world in a new way. 3. You can teach without a degree in theology. The Pharisees were angry when the man tried to teach them about what he had learned from Jesus. The man was no expert and likely uneducated, yet he was teaching about God. Likewise, anyone who follows Jesus has something to share.
