Buried deep beneath the sandstone tanks at the Art Gallery of New South Wales lies a rare and unexpected sight among contemporary art installations: a fleet of strollers, an army of children, and a battalion of parents quietly trailing behind. This playful scene is indicative of The Key’s Under the Mat, the latest installation by New Zealand-born artist Mike Hewson, which has captivated audiences since its debut in October, garnering almost 90,000 visitors since opening. When first approached by the gallery to create a child-friendly environment, Hewson quickly realised the project had the potential to reach beyond just young audiences. “Kids are easy,” he laughs while speaking Culture. “It’s the parents, the carers, the people tagging along that need to feel comfortable too.” Sat in the former WWII oil reservoir, the work breaks from traditional gallery norms by inviting visitors to interact with the art – without the fear of reprimand. But beyond its playful exterior, private corners of the installation centre on expanding creativity, inviting musicians and artists to create within the creation. @ArtGalleryofNSW Connect With The Australian Online 🖥 https://www.theaustralian.com.au Follow Us: Facebook ► / theaustralian Instagram ► https://bit.ly/39w5T2j Twitter ► / australian LinkedIn ► / posts 🎧 Podcast ► https://www.theaustralian.com.au/nati... 🎥 Subscribe To Our YouTube Channel: http://bit.ly/1OT7tw4 #breakingnews #news #headlinenews
