West Mountain is a two-person fixed-grip chairlift located at Sugarloaf. The lift runs from the West Mountain base area up to the mid-mountain area near the Bullwinkle Lodge. The chairlift primarily serves as condo access but also serves the long West Mountain trail. The chairlift also features a mid-station where skiers and riders may load or unload. The lift is the longest at Sugarloaf and a ride up the entire lift can take almost 20 minutes. The chairlift was manufactured by Borvig and installed at the resort in 1984. As part of Sugarloaf's new Sugarloaf2030 plan, the lift will soon be shortened to end at the mid-station in order to pave the way for a new high-speed lift which will serve a large new expansion of intermediate and beginner terrain on the western section of the mountain. Sugarloaf is a ski area located in Carrabassett Valley, Maine. The ski area is located in Northwestern Maine in Franklin County, about an hour north of Farmington and about 2.5 hours north of Portland. The ski area is the second-largest ski area in New England (behind Killington in Vermont) and the largest ski area in Maine, in terms of both skiable area and vertical. The ski area features a wide variety of terrain suitable for all availability levels. Beginners will find plenty to ski in the area below the lodge as well as on the lower half of the mountain, off of lifts such as the Whiffletree SuperQuad and the Double Runner lifts. Intermediates will find plenty of terrain on the western half of the main face of the mountain off of the Super Quad as well as off the summit of the ski area near the Timberline chairlift. Advanced and expert skiers and riders will really feel at home at Sugarloaf, being able to enjoy lots of terrain on the upper half of the mountain off of lifts such as the SuperQuad, Skyline, and King Pine. Sugarloaf is also home to the Snowfields, a famous area of terrain located off the summit of the ski area which is rarely open but when it is it provides the only above-treeline skiing in the East as well as some of the East's most steep and challenging slopes. Sugarloaf is owned by Boyne Resorts, which also owns Maine's second-largest ski area, Sunday River. Sugarloaf is a member of the New England Pass, offering unlimited visits to both Sugarloaf and Sunday River in Maine as well as Loon Mountain in New Hampshire, and is also a partner on the Ikon Pass, granting full pass-holders 7 days at the resort.
