How to calm down an over-excited puppy? How to stop puppy from barking? Puppies get excited quickly - they run in circles, bark non-stop, nip everything, and jump up and down. We think learning to calm down is a useful skill for a puppy. There are certainly multiple ways to teach puppy to calm down. We have used two different approaches on two of our border collie puppies. The first approach to calm down Ellie is to ignore over-excited behaviors and reward calming behaviors. This is a combination of negative and positive reinforcement. Whenever Ellie jumps on us, we would turn away immediately. We do not want to encourage such behaviors. It requires lots of patience to teach her calm down because there is lots of whining and barking, but border collies are intelligent enough to figure out that staying calm gets better reactions from us. The approach to calm down Fia is slightly different because we cannot ignore Fia's barking, otherwise our baby will never get to sleep. We first teach Fia to go to a playpen, which we find is a fantastic way to keep the dog safe and sound when we are busy with our daily life. A playpen is not a prison or punishment, but a signal to teach her to calm down in the playpen. Whenever the young border collie pup becomes possessed, we ask Fia to go to the playpen, which will trigger a sequence of calming down and receiving rewards. It's also important to remain calm when the dog is too excited. Otherwise the owner is just feeding the dog his/her energy. It is really difficult sometimes because hyper puppies can be very annoying. It also may take a while to witness the results as this is a long-term training process. Consistency and patience are the key to the success of training a dog to calm down and not to bark.
