The Athenaeum's Music Committee presents a concert for Athenaeum Members by the talented pupils of the Yehudi Menuhin School. The school's lunchtime concert at the Club planned for 29th April 2020 had to be cancelled because of the first coronavirus lockdown, but the school has kindly recorded this recital for the Athenaeum during its Christmas showcase concerts in the school's Menuhin Hall in front of a small socially distanced audience of Friends and pupils. Unlike the talks at the Athenaeum, the concerts create a cost for the Club as musical artists must be paid a fee, or in this case a donation to the Yehudi Menuhin School. Since the Club cannot recoup that cost through 'ticket' prices as it would if the concert were held in the Club, we ask Members who watch it to consider making a donation of perhaps £10 that will be passed to the school as a fee for the pupils' performance. You can do so by emailing Christina at the Club and asking for the amount of your donation to be charged to your account. For this performance, the school's pupils will perform:- Beethoven's Sextet Op 71 arr for Violin, Viola and Guitar Adagio – Allegro Adagio Minuet. Quasi Allegretto – Trio Rondo. Allegro Performers: Coco Tomita on Violin Ludwig Dorner on Viola Martin Keane on Guitar. Brahms' Quartet Op 51 No 1 in C minor Allegro Romanze – poco Allegro Allegretto molto moderato e comoda Finale: Allegro Performers:- Kyota Kakiuchi on Violin Darwin Chang on Violin Salvatore Di Lorenzo on Viola Hattie McGregor on Cello Notes on the programme provided by the school and brief biographies of the artists are set out in the programme that Christina emailed to Members on 17th December. Information about the school from its website:- The celebrated violinist Yehudi Menuhin founded his school in Surrey in 1963 to provide a place for musically gifted children from around the world to develop their talents to the highest level within a nurturing and stimulating academic environment, regardless of their economic background. Today’s school provides a holistic education for 86 exceptional students aged from 8 to 19, with specialist tuition on the stringed instruments, piano and classical guitar. Our students split their time between their academic and musical studies, and are given many opportunities to perform in front of an audience. Concerts take place regularly in our own Menuhin Hall, but also in local schools, care homes and churches, carrying on Menuhin’s belief in the importance of giving back to the community. Alongside their musical studies, students engage in a stimulating academic programme, and participate in a variety of sporting activities and the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme.
