In this video, we hear from Marvin who suffered post-traumatic stress disorder related to his military service. Today, Marvin uses the skills he learned to help others. He talks about how you can go on and live an enjoyable life when you do the work. (SPEECH) Hi, I'm Marvin. I'm a social worker, and currently live out on the West Coast of Canada, a wonderful place to be. Having gone through my own mental health issues in the workplace and being fortunate to receive a lot of support with getting some time off and then return to work, it really helped with my own resilience or building my own resilience even though it took a couple shots at it. Listening to the people that were around me, taking their words into account, accepting their offer of support, incorporating that, and doing a lot of hard work, and actually engaging in the activities that I tell other people to do. So sleep, eat, exercise, develop your social support networks, it's much more than, lip service isn't the right word but sometimes we don't take that seriously enough. We might go Oh, Yeah, that's fine, I've got all that. But now I really do take that all to heart and really employ that. And I got to tell you, I feel pretty great, and this, the mental health issue in the workplace where I had a month off was about six or seven years ago, and still have ups and downs, but those days are just those days. They aren't related to depression or anxiety, they're just a bad day, whether I didn't sleep well, et cetera. So it's a pretty good place to be, and it's pretty amazing when you actually employ the skills. Pretty wonderful stuff, right? You can go on and live a life, and it's quite enjoyable.
