As someone who identifies as non-binary, Nyk has had to deal with a variety of stigma and discrimination. The experience of a mental health breakdown helped highlight the importance of weaving in all aspects of who you are to live your most effective life. (DESCRIPTION) Nyk Morrigan, Mental Health Coach. Text, Working Through It (SPEECH) My name is Nick. And I have a mental health diagnosis. After having my own mental health breakdown, I really had to break that apart, and why did I have that. What happened? The first was-- it was something that was still manageable. Then I noticed that the medication for me didn't really work. So then the next step was, OK, what is my next step? Then I was doing really well. And then the next thing hit, and so that was more information. And I realized that the lack of acceptance for who I was. Trying to understand who I was a little more, and understanding how my brain wasn't-- I wasn't using my brain as to the optimum I believe that I could have. I (DESCRIPTION) Outdoors, she walks with another woman (SPEECH) tend to see it for me as information. I don't use it as the thing that limits me. I use it as information to help me figure out how to best live the most effective life I can. It's important for me to talk about how all parts of who I am are weaved together. (DESCRIPTION) A button on her jacket reads, Be Who You Are. (SPEECH) So my queer identity, and I use that word specifically because it makes sense for me, is about-- it's that one piece of the puzzle. But so is my mental health diagnosis, but so is my love of animals, so is my love of being in nature, so is being able to laugh with friends. All of those are part of who I am. I feel really lucky to be able to have the opportunity to talk to people, and to be a face, to be visible. Not only just with respect to mental health diagnosis, but also as a part of the queer community. And how do I create mental wellness any place? But especially in the workplace for people who have similar life journeys as I do.
