For our beloved Eleo... This shanty was traditionally sung when the ship was at port after it had docked in the final spell at the pumps. The "her" being left is not a woman, but the ship. The shanty was also known as « Leave Her Bullies », « Time for Us to Leave Her », « Leave Her ». Leave Her, Johnny was used at the pumps, but it also served the purpose of the seamen airing their grievances (hence it being done at the end of a voyage). Kriss : female vocals, whistle, laud, illustration, video, help mastering. Jan : guitars, male vocals, piano, mastering. Geoffrey Loiseau : male vocals, throat singing, jew’s harp. Naomi Cellover : cello. Paul Sordet : cajon, bodhran, male vocals. Recorded in May, 2022. Lyrics : Oh the times were hard and the wages low, Leave her, Johnny, leave her ! And the grub was bad and the gales did blow, And it's time for us to leave her. Leave her, Johnny, leave her, Oh, leave her, Johnny, leave her ! For the voyage is done and the winds do blow, And it's time for us to leave her. I thought I heard the Old Man say, Leave her, Johnny, leave her ! You can go ashore and take your pay, And it's time for us to leave her. Leave her, Johnny, leave her, Oh, leave her, Johnny, leave her ! For the voyage is done and the winds do blow, And it's time for us to leave her. Oh her stern was foul and the voyage was long Leave her, Johnny, leave her ! The winds was bad and the gales was strong, And it's time for us to leave her. Leave her, Johnny, leave her, Oh, leave her, Johnny, leave her ! For the voyage is done and the winds do blow, And it's time for us to leave her. And we'll leave her tight and we'll leave her trim Leave her, Johnny, leave her ! And heave the hungry packet in, And it's time for us to leave her. Leave her, Johnny, leave her, Oh, leave her, Johnny, leave her ! For the voyage is done and the winds do blow, And it's time for us to leave her. Oh, leave her, Johnny, leave her with a grin Leave her, Johnny, leave her ! For there's many a worser we've sailed in, And it's time for us to leave her. Leave her, Johnny, leave her, Oh, leave her, Johnny, leave her ! For the voyage is done and the winds do blow, And it's time for us to leave her. And now it's time to say goodbye Leave her, Johnny, leave her ! For the old pier-head's a-drawing nigh, And it's time for us to leave her. Leave her, Johnny, leave her, Oh, leave her, Johnny, leave her ! For the voyage is done and the winds do blow, And it's time for us to leave her. Leave her, Johnny, leave her, Oh, leave her, Johnny, leave her ! For the voyage is done and the winds do blow, And it's time for us to leave her.
