With this recording one can gain some idea as to why Eugen D'Albert was so highly regarded in his lifetime. Even his master Liszt admired his playing, and although this was famously imperfect, D'Albert had many other qualities which were outstanding. This included his great skill with extemporisation and an ability to make any piano work a cohesive whole. Notable in this performance is the use of rubati and legato together with the remarkably even 'runs' for which he was famous. It is said that his technique though once perfect, deteriorated after his took up composition. However I would suggest that his technique was always imperfect, his fame resting with his dazzling execution allied with the poetry of his playing. The photo of D'Albert shows him with his second wife Hermine. One would guess there is a good reason why she is sitting down, as D'Albert was of very short stature. Liszt nicknamed him 'Albertus Magnus' an ironic reference both to his size and the great mediaeval German philosopher and cleric. This roll performance can be compared to another of the same piece which he recorded for Welte.
