What are homologous chromosomes? How can you tell if chromosomes are homologous? In this video, we'll review what homologous chromosomes actually are, tips for how you can identify them in a diagram, and we'll see how they're different from sister chromatids. #homologous #homologouschromosomes #sisterchromatids When multiple copies of the same type of chromosome are present in a cell, these are homologous chromosomes. These chromosomes are very similar structurally (size and centromere location), and they carry the same genes...BUT, because they're inherited from different parents, the sequences of those genes (alleles) aren't necessarily the same. Contrast that with sister chromatids, which are part of the same replicated chromosome, and are identical.
