This story is set in a small village on the west coast of Korea during the mid- to late twelfth century. The protagonist, Tree-ear, is an orphan who lives with his friend Crane-man under a bridge. Tree-ear begins working for the master potter Min, who crafts exquisite gray-green celadon pottery. Tree-ear admires Min's skill and works for him for a time, eventually wishing to continue working even after his nine days of debt servitude are discharged. Tree-ear learns that the pottery from his village has gained favor among the wealthy, including the royal court. When an emissary, Kim, visits the village to commission new work, Min's rival, Kang, presents an innovative "inlay work" technique that garners attention. Tree-ear undertakes a long and perilous journey to Songdo, carrying Min's best vessels in a double-thick straw container woven by Crane-man, hoping to secure Min a royal commission. Tree-ear must deliver the work personally to the emissary
