On 6 May 2023, I set out for what turned out to be a fairly rainy walk through Clitheroe, in east Lancashire, determined to capture a few images of the shop windows that had been decorated to celebrate the coronation of King Charles III . . . but sometimes, historic moments make historians curious, so I started to dig into the town’s past. Clitheroe is a very old town, but a chance discovery of an 1840s town plan on the National Library of Scotland’s Historic Maps website quickly revealed that - during the early Victorian period - certain streets in the town looked completely different. Join me for a walk through time to discover more about vanished Methodist chapels, two long-gone inns with confusingly similar names, and a newspaper report featuring some very significant errors about the Royal Family. Along the way, we’ll also meet the family of a doctor whose burial site remains a mystery (for now) and a surprising number of people residing in Harris Court in 1851, before ending with a case study that centres on an address on Wellgate.
