InsightShare's Living Cultures is a growing movement uniting Indigenous communities across borders; to celebrate, foster and protect their cultures with Participatory Video at its very heart. Members of both the Indigenous Ogiek, and Indigenous Sengwer communities produced four films to craft their video making skills and storytelling skills. We hope this fellowship will be the starting point for a powerful relationship between Insightshare, the Ogiek, and the Sengwer in using PV to affect significant change. This is one of the four films made by members of the Indigenous Ogiek community as part of their journey in the Living Cultures Indigenous Fellowship, through which they gained video making skills and storytelling skills. The film tells the folk story of the Mau Forest, the Witch doctor Kangera and his daughter Kawawa who live in the forest. The story is about the strong connection between the Ogiek people and the forest. This film tells the strong connection between the Ogiek people and the nature that they are a part of. Indigenous people of the Ogiek community are well informed of the flora and fauna of the forest because they are a part of it. Their traditional ecological knowledge plays a crucial role in protecting the forests of the Ogiek people. Video communicates compelling stories and powerful actions of grassroots activists, increasing our partners' agency, capacity and confidence to take control of the factors influencing their lives. We work across four continents in critically endangered ecosystems supporting Indigenous Peoples to harness the power of participatory video against threats like climate change and mega development projects. Support for this programme is spearheaded by the Bertha Foundation and the Staples Trust.
