#rawalpindi #rawalpindicity #lalkurti Famous Gandi Gali of Rawalpindi I British-era Red Light Area I Lal Kurti I Memories of the Past Special Thanks: Muhammad Imran, Bean's & Bite's, Lal Kurti Music: Binu Kumar, Kerala, India @SoundSFX (Under License) Lalkurti (red shirt; referring to British Infantry "Red coats" from colonial era), is a locality in the heart of Rawalpindi cantonment in Pakistan. Places with the same name are also found in many other garrison cities of Pakistan and India, such as Peshawar, Lahore, Kanpur, Ambala, Meerut and Delhi. Located to the south of Mall Road, Lalkurti Rawalpindi is a bazaar and a residential area from the British colonial era. The Lalkurti Bazaar area, formerly known as B I Bazaar (British Infantry Bazaar), is one of the busiest shopping areas of Rawalpindi cantonment. The importance of Lalkurti in the history of Rawalpindi and Pakistan lies in its once being the hub of Pakistan's military and political activities, especially in the 1960s, when Rawalpindi served as the interim capital of Pakistan. The first session of the third National Assembly of Pakistan was held on 8 June 1962 at Ayub Hall, Lalkurti. There are six mosques and a couple of churches (St. Joseph's Cathedral and Christ Church) in the locality. The Christian minority and the Muslims have always lived in exemplary cohesion. Army Museum is situated next to the CSD shopping complex, on Iftikhar Janjua road (formerly called Napier road). It exhibits vintage arms and ammunition, relics of past wars, war paintings and belongings of the Pakistani war heroes. There are several renowned education institutes in the area including Army Public School and College, Army Public College of Management Sciences (APCOMS), SLS Montessori, F G Technical High School, Saint Catherine high school and Presentation Convent. Poet, writer and columnist Raziuddin Razi has described Lal Kurti in a detailed article titled “Multan Mera Roman” that the name of the cantonment neighborhood has come to be known as Lal Kurti because of the Lal Kurti women. Lal Kurti is a corrupted name of the Red Light Area. All the areas, including Pakistan, that were under the rule of the British Crown, along with the military cantonments built by the British government, red light areas were also built there which still exist today in one form or another especially those cantonments in which soldiers who came on lam were kept. Lam means those soldiers who were called for a long period and came from every corner of the British Crown. Lal Kurti means Red Light Area. These are areas built with regular planning in which two-marla houses have narrow and dark streets and central doors. Instead of keeping the streets deliberately open, they have been kept narrow and dark so that vehicles cannot pass through the streets and especially senior military officers do not turn around in their vehicles. A kind of secrecy has been taken into account. Small markets have been built between the houses. Gifts, cosmetics and bath accessories were available from here. The market seems to be for women but most of the buyers were young soldiers who called the market a bazaari. In some cities, Lal Kurti is still there in its old form. The old houses in Lal Kurti Rawalpindi are still there today, but the residents have changed and there are now commercial activities all around the locality.
