We all like to focus on our strengths, and that’s a good thing. But it’s equally important to recognize what can happen when we overuse those strengths. For example, if you're highly driven and rarely allow yourself to slow down, you may be more susceptible to chronic dissatisfaction and a constant desire for more. Psychologists call this the “hedonic treadmill”—a concept that describes how high achievers can become trapped in a cycle of ambition that never feels satisfying. Research shows these individuals are more likely to experience elevated anxiety, which can lead to frustration, burnout, and even depression. Relationships can also become strained and suffer. On the other hand, those who learn to find contentment in their lives tend to report lower stress levels and healthier, more fulfilling relationships. So, what can we do about it? Take a few minutes to watch the newest episode of the Relationshifts podcast, where we talk about the “shadow side” of our personalities and how to manage those tendencies before they affect our well-being and the people we care about. While it’s good to recognize what we do well, it’s even wiser to understand how to regulate those strengths. When we shift from overusing our strengths to managing them well, we will make a difference. Larry
