Today, I'll be discussing interoception and mindfulness with you. Existing research shows that interoception is highly changeable, and studies are using mindfulness to enhance our interoceptive connection. As a practitioner, I categorize mindfulness into two types: outside mindfulness and inside mindfulness. Outside mindfulness involves focusing on things external to our body, like the sounds in our environment. Inside mindfulness, on the other hand, directs attention inward to notice bodily sensations. For interoception, it's crucial to have body-focused mindfulness, as it helps people connect with their bodies. However, traditional mindfulness might not suit everyone's needs. It often requires high attention and cognition, making it challenging for some to maintain focus. To adapt traditional body mindfulness, we've created Interoceptive Awareness Builders (IA Builders), which are modified versions of body-focused mindfulness. You can find our framework for using IA builders in our Interoception Curriculum. We've learned that starting with observable body parts, like hands, before moving to more abstract ones, helps people engage better. We never force participation; it's always an invitation for individuals to have full autonomy. We also support their interoception vocabulary, whether they experience inner sensations as shapes, colors, or traditional descriptors like hot or cold. One important insight is to engage in body mindfulness during activities that evoke stronger sensations. Incorporating play, like squeezing stress balls or doing jumping jacks, helps improve attention and makes it more enjoyable.
