Today, I’m thrilled to share something super special with you — the story of how I built my very first gearbox, featuring an insane 729:1 gear ratio — and all of it without any machining! 🚀 In this video, I’ll take you through a close-up look at my homemade gearbox project. First, I’ll show you one of the compound gears I made, with a precise 60-tooth and 20-tooth combination. I’ll also demonstrate how the shaft fits perfectly into the gear hole, proving the incredible accuracy of this build — even though I didn’t use any special machining or advanced tools. It’s all about smart design and careful assembly! 🛠️ Then, we move on to the assembled gearbox. I’ll show you a fascinating phenomenon: the first gear moves effortlessly, while the final gear demands serious force to rotate. Why? That’s the magic of gear ratios in action! ⚙️ With six stages of 3:1 reduction, the final output ends up with a massive 729:1 gear ratio. That means you need 729 turns of the first gear to make the final gear complete just one revolution — giving you incredible torque at the output! I’ll also quickly explain the basic principle behind gear ratios and walk you through a fast calculation, so you can appreciate how powerful even a simple gearbox design can be.
