IEICE English Webinar: Distinguished Lecturer Program Series – February 2026 【Title】Introduction of error correction techniques for quantum computers 【Lecturer】Prof. Jun Heo 【Affiliation】Korea University,The Korean Institute of Communications and Information Sciences 【Expected Audience level】Intermediate 【Summary】 Qubits, which make up quantum computers, are extremely unstable and frequently experience errors. For quantum computers to function properly, these errors must be corrected, and since the mid-1990s, various theoretical quantum error-correcting codes have been studied. Recently, led by IBM and Google, quantum error-correcting codes have begun to be implemented on actual quantum computers, and the benefits of error correction are starting to be experimentally demonstrated. In this speech, I will explore the development of quantum error-correcting codes, explain their basic principles, and examine the quantum error correction technologies that are currently being realized. 【Biography】 Jun Heo (Member, IEEE) received the B.S. and M.S. degrees in electronics engineering from Seoul National University, Seoul, South Korea, in 1989 and 1991, respectively, and the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, CA, USA, in 2002. From 1991 to 1997, he was a Senior Research Engineer with LG Electronics Company Inc. He is currently a Professor with the School of Electrical Engineering, Korea University, Seoul. His research interests include channel coding theory and quantum communication. 【Send Feedback】 https://forms.office.com/r/fiDrnVzrMe 【Follow us on Twitter】 @Ieice_trans twitter.com/Ieice_trans 00:00 Introduction to Quantum Error Correction 00:43 The Necessity of QEC and Current Error Rates 04:20 Basic Concepts of Surface Code and Qubits 12:34 A History of Quantum Error Correction 18:20 Global Leaders and Hardware Advancements 24:16 Discretization and Types of Quantum Errors 29:50 Case Study: The 3-Qubit Bit Flip Code 42:19 Mathematical Framework: Stabilizer Formalis 52:41 Error Detection and Decoding in Surface Code 01:00:26 Toward Fault-Tolerant Quantum Computing (FTQC) 01:09:21 Maintaining Code Space during Operation 01:13:19 Future Research Directions and Conclusion
