Artis Wodehouse foot-pumps -- i.e., pianolizes -- a ca. 1905 piano roll, selections from Babes in Toyland by Victor Herbert on her restored 1912 player piano. The roll -- QRS 20137 -- features a medley of tunes from Victor Herbert's classic operetta as arranged by Karl Hoschna. Hoschna was closely associated with the 1903 premiere of Babes in Toyland. He published several printed sheet music piano solo arrangements of the work, and was likely a personal colleague of Victor Herbert. This QRS piano roll from ca. 1905 is a brilliant example of an arranged piano roll, one that did not come from a performance with 10 fingers, but which was cut directly into the paper roll by editors and arrangers. Exactly what contribution Hoschna made to the creation of this roll is not documented, but before his untimely death at the age of 33 in 1911 he was quite active as an accomplished composer and arranger . For more information about Hoschna, see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karl_Ho.... Via foot-pumping, the pianolist (person foot-pumping through the roll) supplied the airflow needed to drive the roll across the tracker bar causing the notes to sound. Additionally, foot pump player pianos were mechanically designed so that the pianolist could interactively execute expressive nuances — dynamic and temporal shifts — as the roll unfurled. The faint blue line inscribed on the piano roll was meant as an elective guide for the person foot-pumping to add dynamics. Line moving left is soft, right is loud. Wodehouse largely follows this line, called the expression line. Recorded 12/24/22
