INS Anjadip Commissioning – Strengthening India’s Coastal Defence Today we discuss the commissioning of INS Anjadip, a major milestone for the Indian Navy under its Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW-SWC) programme. INS Anjadip is the third vessel in the eight-ship ASW-SWC Project, designed specifically to enhance India’s coastal and shallow-water defence capabilities. What is INS Anjadip? INS Anjadip is a state-of-the-art Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft built for operations in coastal and littoral combat environments. It is specially optimised for detecting, tracking, and neutralising enemy submarines operating near India’s shores. Often referred to as the “Dolphin Hunter,” the vessel plays a crucial role in submarine detection and underwater threat management. The new INS Anjadip is also considered the reincarnation of the earlier INS Anjadip, a Petya-class corvette that served the Navy before being decommissioned in 2003. The revival of the name reflects tradition combined with modern naval capability. Builder & Indigenous Development- The vessel has been built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE), Kolkata, under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. The private industry partner in this project is L&T Shipyard. INS Anjadip is fully designed and constructed in India, showcasing the country’s growing strength in indigenous warship production. The project highlights India’s push towards self-reliance in defence manufacturing and advanced naval technology. ASW-SWC Project – Fleet Expansion- The ASW-SWC Project aims to induct a total of eight specialised vessels for shallow-water anti-submarine operations. INS Anjadip is the third ship in this class. Other vessels in the series include INS Mahe and INS Malvan. These ships are strategically deployed for coastal submarine defence and significantly enhance the Indian Navy’s shallow-water combat capabilities. Operational Role & Strategic Importance- INS Anjadip is designed to protect India’s coastline, ports, harbours, and critical coastal approaches. It is capable of detecting, tracking, and neutralising enemy submarines in shallow waters, where submarine operations can pose serious threats to national security. Its operational role becomes even more crucial in littoral warfare scenarios, where combat takes place close to shorelines. The induction of such advanced vessels strengthens India’s maritime security architecture and ensures better surveillance near coastal regions. Weapons & Advanced Sensors- INS Anjadip is equipped with lightweight torpedoes, indigenously developed anti-submarine rockets, and mine-laying capability. A key feature of the ship is its hull-mounted sonar system “Abhay,” which is optimised for shallow-water submarine detection. These advanced weapons and sensors make it a powerful platform for underwater warfare. Aatmanirbhar Bharat & Builder’s Navy Vision- The commissioning of INS Anjadip aligns with the Government of India’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative. It demonstrates indigenous warship design, domestic defence manufacturing capability, and technological self-reliance. The project reflects India’s transition towards becoming a “Builder’s Navy,” reducing dependence on foreign suppliers and strengthening strategic maritime autonomy. With INS Anjadip joining the fleet, the Indian Navy takes another strong step toward securing India’s vast coastline and enhancing underwater defence preparedness.
