He received an undergraduate degree in biochemistry from the University of Cambridge, a medical degree from the University of Oxford, and a PhD in physiology and neuroscience from the University of Oslo. He is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics and Neuroscience at the University of Washington School of Medicine, where his laboratory focuses on brain health across the lifespan including in babies born preterm, adults who experience brain trauma, and the confluence of factors that affect long-term cognitive function and risk of dementia. Tommy has published more than 100 scientific papers and lectured all over the world about brain health, metabolism, physical activity, and human performance. Alongside his career in medicine and research, he has also been a performance consultant to professional athletes in multiple sports including several Olympians and world champions, and helped to found the British Society for Lifestyle Medicine - the fastest growing lifestyle medicine society in the world. His experiences include caring for dementia patients, running a team of scientists as part of a large international neuroscience research program, being a health coach to individuals struggling with a range of health conditions, working with digital health companies to develop ways to support individuals in building new habits and improve their health, and helping Formula 1 drivers maintain focus and performance while driving at 200 miles per hour. He has also trained and competed in multiple sports himself including rowing, CrossFit, and powerlifting. He came in the top 20 in the world's first ever fully off-road ironman triathlon, and was 2nd at Washington's Strongest Man in 2024. This work gives him a broad perspective and an ability to see the big picture and help people support their brain health in a personal and practical manner. --- EPISODE LINKS : Instagram: @drtommywood Book: [thestimulatedmind.com](http://thestimulatedmind.com/) Substack: https://www.betterbrain.fitness/ --- CHAPTERS: 0:00 - Intro 0:33 - Dementia risk and Physiological Presentation 14:30 - Tommy’s Model of the Brain 22:15 - Metabolic Function of the Brain 29:00 - Early Brain Development 44:00 - Learning New Skills 55:00 - AI and Cognitive Decline 1:01:00 - Brain Training in Sports 1:15:00 - Light Exposure and Brain Health 1:18:15 - The Stimulated Mind --- CONNECT : ► Subscribe for more videos here: / @upsidestrengthen ► Programs & Courses: https://www.upsidestrengthacademy.com... ► Twitter: / seanseale ► Instagram: / upside_strength_en --- WHO IS SEAN ?
