Neurologists are often called upon to evaluate patients in the hospital and clinic presenting with neuromuscular weakness. One important manifestation may be respiratory insufficiency, an often underrecognized complication of nerve and muscle disorders. Prompt recognition and treatment of neuromuscular respiratory insufficiency may be potentially lifesaving and has important implications on morbidity and mortality. In this video, we describe how to identify early signs and symptoms of hypoventilation related to neuromuscular disease, and management options in order to prevent neuromuscular respiratory failure.
