The family business is active in grading, packing and exporting onions to 84 countries worldwide. They have even invested in their own plots, making them a full-fledged agricultural company. MSP Onions has short communication lines with the nearby port of Vlissingen for flexible and fast deliveries. Innovation is key With innovation and sustainability in mind, the construction of Factory of the Future came about. This efficient factory is fully automated and takes over labour-intensive activities. Through intelligent, AI-driven software, they can assess the external and internal quality of the onions. "It was a huge challenge to match the mechanical operation of the grading machine with AI results. We finally managed to do that. So now we can guarantee 99% accuracy." Lindert Moerdijk, commercial director and co-owner of MSP Onions: “We strongly believe in AI as MSP, because we can see a real difference and know what to expect from the machine." 𝗢𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆 A major challenge in the production process was keeping the sieves in the onion topper clean. “Previously, we did this manually, where you literally stood with your working boots on the sieve that the onions would pass over”, says Lindert. This resulted in five cleanings a day, with 15 minutes of downtime each time, and a weekly thorough cleaning. To improve food safety and minimise labour problems for the operators, MSP started looking for a solution. In late 2022, they got in touch with KV-Techniek, “The Robot Company”. This robot specialist from Zeeland developed a robot that automates the changing and cleaning of the sieves. This automation solution significantly sped up the process. This process now takes about two minutes, where previously it took 15 minutes each time. "That is now pure profit! So the ROI of the robot was actually very simple", says Lindert. While the robot switches sieves from one line, the other just keeps running. This keeps production running efficiently. 𝘓𝘦𝘦𝘴 𝘩𝘦𝘵 𝘩𝘦𝘭𝘦 𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘪𝘬𝘦𝘭 𝘰𝘱: 𝘸𝘸𝘸.𝘬𝘷-𝘵𝘦𝘤𝘩𝘯𝘪𝘦𝘬.𝘯𝘭
