Job Interview Skills: How to Recover From the 2 Ways An Interview Can Go Wrong You can find out more about me from my website: http://www.redincllc.com This is your worst nightmare, but it's easy to recover from. You just have to be prepared for it to happen and know what to do. A few things can happen in the interview. Usually you will find yourself talking too much in the interview and you just can't stop talking. You are nervous, anxious and worried. In the interview you feel like your mouth keeps moving, but you don't even know what you're talking about anymore. What I recommend is that you call it out and acknowledge that you're talking a lot. Acknowledge that you're nervous and that you're talking a lot, but that you're going to take a breath and let the interviewer speak for a few minutes. Sometimes just acknowledging that you're nervous helps the employer understand if this is how you normally are, or if this is how you act when you're nervous. Because if you don't do that, they'll think that this is how you always are, and that's not a good thing. They likely don't want to hire a nonstop chatterbox. As a hiring manager and recruiter, we are always asking ourselves that question. Just call out the elephant in the room. The other reason an interview can tank is because you are not the right fit for the position. So instead of sticking it out and hoping that the tide turns in your favor, I recommend acknowledging it with the employer, and leaving. Politely. "I'm not sure that it sounds like I'm the right person for you. I would suggest that we stop this interview now because unless you know of another position that would be a fit for me, I don't think I fit what you are looking for." Instead of having it erode your self confidence, I'd rather have you pull the rip cord and get out of there to preserve your self confidence for the next interview where you are the perfect candidate.
