Like how The Flintstones started out as a prime time show with the main animated characters selling cigarettes during the commercials and even smoking them!. Then there is the famous voice actor who fell into a coma after a head-on collision… But then his doctors began talking to him as if he were a cartoon character. And he came back to life! Find out which character brought him back from death’s door. Then there’s Super Friends, the cartoon that was not allowed to animate any violence. They weren’t even allowed to throw a punch. So they had to find very creative ways to bring the villains to justice. Then there’s the Archies song Sugar Sugar that was the biggest Hit song of the year. Topping the Beatles and the stones but the singer Ron Dante behind it had to keep his identity a secret for decades…. We’re traveling back in time to catch up with a modern stone-age family and then blasting into the future for their space age counterpart. That’s right, I’ve got the Flintstones and the Jetsons themes. Debuting in black and white in 1960, The Flintstones (featuring Fred and Wilma, Barney and Betty) was heavily inspired by the popular live-action sitcom The Honeymooners. Said William Hanna of Hanna-Barbera fame, "At that time, The Honeymooners was the most popular show on the air, and for my bill, it was the funniest show on the air.... that influenced greatly what we did with The Flintstones... We used that as a kind of basis for the concept." Hanna-Barbera even hired live-action writers Herbert Finn and Sydney Zelinka from The Honeymooners to nail the dialogue on the show. Originally pitched under the title The Flagstones, the series made TV history as the first animated program to air in prime time. And before it became a childhood staple, The Flintstones was sponsored by Winston Cigarettes… featuring ads with Fred and Barney smoking it up. They’d strike matches against prehistoric rocks, light up, and sing the slogan “Winston tastes good like a cigarette should." But that partnership ended in 1963 when Wilma became pregnant with Pebbles. As far as the Flintstones theme song goes, the first two seasons used an instrumental piece called “Rise and Shine.” But the show’s producers knew they needed to step it up. So the iconic theme “Meet the Flintstones” was composed by Hoyt Curtin for the 3rd season. Later, in syndication, it was retroactively added to the opening and ending credits of the earlier seasons. The vocals for the "Meet the Flintstones" were performed by the Randy Van Horne Singers, accompanied by a 22-piece big band. And man, this has gotta be one of the most iconic themes ever. But I also gotta mention this crazy story that I came across. So get this, in 1961, voice acting legend Mel Blanc, who voiced Barney Rubble, was tragically involved in a near-fatal head-on car collision. And it put him into a coma for weeks. Blanc was completely unresponsive until one of his neurologists began addressing him by the cartoon characters he had voiced. "How are you feeling today, Bugs Bunny?" After pause, Mel answered, "Eh ... just fine, Doc. How are you?" The doctor asked Tweety if he was there, too. And Blanc replied, “I tawt I taw a puddy tat.” And that was the beginning of Mel Blanc’s road to recovery. Once he’d returned to consciousness, Blanc was so eager to get back to work he began recording Barney’s lines from his hospital bed while encased in a full-body cast. Just crazy… Well, because The Flintstones was a hit, Hanna-Barbera decided to make another prime-time cartoon: The Jetsons. It was essentially the same idea, but set in the future.
