Compound-complex sentences Now, we are going to explore the world of compound-complex sentences. These sentences are a combination of compound and complex sentences, and they are sure to make your writing more interesting and engaging. Let's start with a simple definition. A compound-complex sentence is a sentence that has two or more independent clauses and one or more dependent clauses. In other words, it's like having a sentence within a sentence, with a conjunction to connect them. Here's an example: "I love to play basketball, but I'm not very good at it, because I'm always missing the shot." Can you see the two independent clauses "I love to play basketball" and "I'm not very good at it"? And can you see the dependent clause "because I'm always missing the shot"? That's a compound-complex sentence! Now, let's add a little humour to it. "I love to play basketball, but I'm not very good at it, because every time I jump to make a shot, my knees give up on me faster than my mind." See? By adding humour, the sentence becomes more interesting and engaging. Remember, when forming a compound-complex sentence, make sure to use proper punctuation to clearly separate the clauses and show the relationships between them. Try forming your own compound-complex sentences and see how they turn out. Exercise: "Compound-Complex Conundrum" In this exercise, you'll practise identifying compound-complex sentences.
