Recently, many companies have revised their CO₂ goals, sparking accusations of greenwashing and public distrust, while others avoid setting or communicating goals altogether. Dr. Garst dives into why companies do not achieve their environmental and social goals and asks how firms can set goals that are both ambitious and measurable and whether they can adjust them if they prove too ambitious. Jilde Garst is an Assistant Professor at the Business Management and Organisation group of Wageningen University & Research. Her research is divided into two streams: 1) the role of organizational values and norms in response to societal grand challenges; 2) the ability of standards to diffuse new norms for corporate behavior in a society in transition. She applies these lenses to several contexts: sustainability accounting & reporting, sustainable product development, and transformative academia. Her work on "values-sensitive absorptive capacity" and "double materiality" has been published in, amongst others, California Management Review, Business & Society, and Journal of Responsible Innovation. Her article on double materiality and sustainability reporting was nominated for the best paper award 2023 by California Management Review. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
