Written, performed and produced by Stephen Picton Backing arranged and performed by Josie Black It’s a dreich dreary day in this bonnie wee seaside town, And the folk on the Brae, not so cheery today walk quickly their gaze to the ground, But lift up your heads And open fully your eyes - You’ll be gifted instead To a moment’s wooly surprise. The weatherman says this depression could last past the day, The Haar in the harbour has painted the masts a less thrilling fifty shades of grey. But just by the school there’s a weird and wonderful sight - Strange creations of wool that appeared just overnight ... Knit me a smile, Crochet a scene, Stitch it with style So we know there’s a theme, Yarn me a yarn By needle or hook, Sew it with charm So we’ll all take a look, Turn this grey town from a frown To a grin by design, Save this downer I’m in With your stitch in time. On the bandstand today there’s no band and the strand’s not so grand, Caravans abandoned, no folk planning tans, just mad wild swimmers stand on the sand, The Links look quite bare and might for a while, Take a glimpse, over there (where?) there’s a delight to brighten your smile. No rainbows today at the splashpad the joggers jog by, James’s has closed up the shutters now - no bizarre flavour ice creams to buy, No kids in the playground, it’s too cold to play, But something just up the way’s bound, young or old, to make your day. So knit me a smile, Crochet a scene, Stitch it with style So we know there’s a theme, Yarn me a yarn, By needle or hook, Sew it with charm So we’ll all take a look, Turn this grey town from a frown To a grin by design, Save this downer I’m in With your stitch in time. Cute wooly snowmen in Santa hats, Postman Pat and his black and white cat, Easter bunnies and Christmas trees Pipers and whisky and festivities Folk on the bandstand enjoying the sun Or down on the beach having all kinds of fun. A fisherwoman with some fish in her net Soldiers and poppies lest we forget. The sky is so dark it makes you wonder if Nairn really rocks, But by the supermarket there’s a wonder atop the postbox ... So knit me a smile, Crochet a scene, Stitch it with style So we know there’s a theme, Yarn me a yarn By needle or hook, Sew it with charm So we’ll all take a look, Turn this grey town from a frown To a grin by design, Save this downer I’m in With your stitch in time.
