The Worker Becomes Queen The Worker Becomes Queen is a short documentary film capturing the making of Global Grooves’ large-scale street performance presented at La Mercè Festival 2025 in Barcelona. At its heart, this is a story about labour, women’s leadership and collective pride. Inspired by the industrial histories of Greater Manchester and Catalonia, and shaped through an international exchange of artists and communities, the work reimagines the worker as a symbol of dignity, resilience and transformation. Through months of co-creation, Saddleworth Women’s Morris & Clog, Indian Association Oldham’s Dancing Diyas, UK and Catalan artists, musicians and makers have developed new choreography, music, textile work and large-scale visual elements. English folk and South Asian dance traditions sit in dialogue with Catalan and international processional forms in a spirit of mutual respect, revealing shared rhythms of procession, protest and collective strength. Created through workshops, residencies and shared making at The Vale in Mossley, this first chapter follows the journey from community rehearsal rooms in Oldham and Tameside to the streets of Barcelona. It marks the beginning of a wider story that continues towards Manchester Day 2026. Produced by Global Grooves and commissioned by XTRAX for MCRxLaMercè2025. Supported by Manchester City Council, Arts Council England and XTRAX. Funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund, Greater Manchester Combined Authority, GM Arts, Oldham Council and Tameside Metropolitan Borough Council.
