There’s learning from your mistakes, and then there’s being obsessed with the past. Cowboy Bebop is the classic 90s anime, following the misadventures of Spike Spiegel, Jet Black, Faye Valentine, Ed, and Ein as they bounty hunt across the solar system. The often discussed theme of the anime is “letting go of the past,” with each character exploring a different mistake related to that theme (as we’ve explained in past video essays for Faye and Ed!). Jet Black’s addition is one of the more interesting to analyze, because it’s too much of a good thing. As all of Cowboy Bebop shows, Jet is a man who learns from his mistakes, often nice and safe while Spike rushes into danger and injures himself. However, he takes this idea into extremes, obsessed with answering every uncertainty of the past before acting, cutting off his future. Often seen dwelling on and overthinking previous events, he’s the opposite of nostalgic, ruminating endlessly. Eventually, it seems that Jet does learn to move on to an uncertain future, accepting all the pain he once would overthink, but it only comes after many mistakes, failures, and obsession. So, what can we learn from an analysis of the anime’s less discussed character? Will dwelling on him for a moment help us let go and move on?
