Vinland Saga is one of the greatest anime of all time, a 24 episode tale of vikings exploring what love means in a terrible world, the problem of evil and religion, but most notably for today, the role that parents play and how it meshes with the world. Thors and Ragnar, fathers to Thorfinn and Canute respectively, are both kind and caring individuals. Thors was once the greatest viking, but upon having a child realized life was inherently valuable, and sacrificed all his glory and work thus far to run away to Iceland, trading a comfortable life where he was the greatest for a harsh one persisting through cold and hunger, but free from the threat of, or having to force on others, war and slavery. Thors finds this best for his children Ylva and Thorfinn, desiring them to lead simple lives which maintain the inherent value of human life. However, in doing so he keeps them from experiencing everything which led him to draw such a conclusion, skewing their perspective. To them, the worst thing in the world is Iceland, and they each desire what Thors fought so hard to leave… Ragnar is not Canute’s biological father, a role belonging to King Sweyn, but rather he’s the prince's caretaker. Meant to raise Canute to be a viking leader, he instead raises him with christian values, teaching him to be temperate and meek instead of bold and violent. As such, Canute lives a very comfortable life, and one he loves, but it also keeps him reliant on Ragnar and ill-fit for the role he must play, unable to speak in front of other people even; how could he ever be a king? Due to Ragnar raising him for blind love rather than considering the situation, Canute’s life is decided to be cut short, raising the question; was blind love what was best for the prince? Through these generational relationships, Vinland Saga raises important questions about the role of parents, ones that this anime video essay hopes to explain and expand upon.
