SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Amir al-Musawi, demonstration organiser: “Here, in front of the Iranian embassy in Baghdad we announce the solidarity of the Iraqi people with the Iranian people. These common interests and ideological dimensions between the Iranian and Iraqi people show the world that any targeting of the (Islamic) Republic is a targeting of all Muslims, and it is a warning message to all Muslims to join their brothers in the Islamic Republic of Iran, to defend them, their interests, and their existence. This targeting by the Zionist entity or (Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin) Netanyahu is a bad omen for all Arabs and Islam.” 5. Various of demonstrators waving flags 6. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Mohammed al-Bahadili, demonstration organiser: “From here, we declare our solidarity with the Islamic Republic and reject any flagrant aggressions by the great Satan and the global arrogance on the Islamic Republic, because we have a common enemy. So, we swear to Allah that we will not evacuate our front and will not abandon our weapons, or give it to anyone except to the awaited Mahdi.” 7. Various of demonstrators carrying flags, chanting STORYLINE: Hundreds of Iraqis demonstrated in Baghdad on Friday in a show of support for the Iranian government and its supporters amid raised tensions with the United States. Protesters burned US and Israel flags and chanted slogans, while some lifted up posters of Iranian supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Amir al-Musawi, who helped organised the demonstration, said protesters had chosen to rally outside the Iranian embassy in Baghdad to show "solidarity" with the Islamic Republic. Protests in Iran which began over the country's ailing economy on December 28 soon morphed into demonstrations directly challenging the nation's theocracy, which responded with a harsh crackdown. The U.S.-based Human Rights Activists News Agency on Friday put the death toll, at 2,797. The number continues to rise. Days after Trump pledged “help is on its way” for the protesters, both the demonstrations and the prospect of imminent U.S. retaliation appeared to have receded.
