Off Kenya’s Coast, a Vampire Fish Helps Fishermen Catch Rays. In the waters once sailed by Sinbad the Sailor, a centuries-old fishing technique still thrives among the Bajun people of the Lamu Archipelago. Alphan and Aruni, two Bajun fishermen from the island of Kiwayu, practice remora fishing — a rare and astonishing method. Their fishing partner? A remora, or “vampire fish,” named for the suction disc on its head and its eerie habit of latching onto turtles, stingrays, and even sharks. As Ramadan begins, Alphan and Aruni prepare their traditional dhow and head out to sea. With the help of their living tool — the remora — they track and catch stingrays and other sea creatures. By evening, they return to share their catch with family and break their fasts, thanks to one of the ocean’s strangest partnerships.
