Session 4: Multilateralism, nationalism and the future of international order

As the post-WWII multilateral project fragments, what might replace it? Will the rise of nation-first international politics continue – and with what long-term implications for peace and prosperity? Or can new coalitions of the willing ensure trade and climate cooperation between a diminished pool of countries? Two intellectual approaches to these questions were presented, before a double interview. Professor Gérard Roland presented his thesis for a new multilateralism based on common rules upheld by democracies. Pascal Lamy then drew on his experience at the EU Commission and WTO to reflect on the outlook for international order moving forward. Afterwards, Bruegel Senior Fellows Heather Grabbe & André Sapir cross-interviewed them in a new conversation format.
