Karuma Closure Consequences Local leaders and road users in Lango have appealed to government for an immediate intervention to decongest the current overwhelming traffic at the Kungu-Masindi Port Ferry. For the last four days crossing to and fro Masindi port has been a serious hurdle due to the limited capacity of the existent ferries visa vis the number of vehicles crossing through this alternative route after the closure of Karuma Bridge. AMBIENCE This que is what meets the eye as one arrives at the Ferry site both in Kungu and Masindi port. Small cars and heavy trucks take different lines as they wait to be allowed in shifts of about 6 to 10 cars to access the docking site. From here to the docking site is about 1km. it is manned by traffic police on both sides. Motorists we spoke to have spent here over four hours and are not sure when they will cross to the other side. Maxwel a truck driver says the delay is causing them to enter unnecessary expenses. Others say they are counting losses due to the delays Since the closure of Karuma bridge, majority of motorists resorted to Apac-Masindi Port route as a cheaper alternative to connect to Kampala. UNRA has added another Ferry but their capacity seems small to effectively handle the heavy traffic. Both ferries make a about 30trips a day. Each ferry carries between 5-8cars and about 90 passengers. On Wednesday the matter was also raised in parliament and government promised to meet leaders from the region to device solutions. The district chairpersons in Lango wants government to use this experience to invest in domestic flight facilities, suggesting that all cities should have functional airfields. Other alternative they have suggested is the opening of the small bridge at the power dam, hire of more ferry operators to support the existing staff, repair of the roads leading to the ferry site and allowing free usage of the park road.
