This is by far my favorite Beatles album but I have always had a fascination towards all the different mixes of the album. I wanted to see if I could create a nice, powerful sounding mono mix of the opening tracks as an experiment, just for fun really, and boy did it take a lot of work. Information: 1) Sgt. Peppers (opening track) was especially hard since I had to work with the moggs from The Beatles Rockband. The Drums/Georges Lead Guitar/Paul's Rhythm Guitar/horns were all bounced together and the old machine learning technology that was used in 2009 to try to isolate the drums really did not work at all and sounded horrid on its own. I made multiple splices where the horns and audience kicked in and the other tracks dropped out so I would have one track just with Drums, Paul's Rhythm Guitar and Georges Lead Guitar and the other with just the audience and horns. It still was not perfect with the audience sometimes being interlaced with the guitars and drums as well as the horns, so I threw that into modern machine learning technology to try and isolate the audience from the instruments as best as possible, even combing the original tracks with parts of the new isolated ones and eventually I got a result that sounds good when mixed. The good thing is that the vocals, Paul's Lead Guitar, and bass were not bounced and were all on a separate track. I ran all of the tracks through the Waves Abbey Road REDD Consoles Plugin with the REDD. 51 Console selected and tweaked eq from there, adding more low end to the drums/guitars and bass tracks, and a little more top end to the vocals. I left the horns and audience alone since it sounded fine to begin with. 2) With A Little Help From My Friends was way easier to mix since mostly all the tracks were separate. The vocals, Drums, Bass, and Guitar were all isolated besides the opening where there is some auxiliary percussion and extra pianos/other organs. The only track I had to modify using machine learning once more was the piano track because the double tracked (90% sure it was) tambourine was bounced to the piano track. Luckily since that was the ONLY track that had an extraneous instruments, machine learning did a very good job of completely isolating the tambourine, even almost perfectly. I ran all of the tracks through the Waves Abbey Road REDD Consoles Plugin with the REDD. 51 Console selected again and added some reverb to the vocals and some more top end, low end to the drums, and low end to the bass and piano as well as some additional high end. I did not touch the tambourine since it was already fine to my ears. Honestly Im amazed at how we have come this far with technology that I was able to separate combined tracks from almost 60 year old 4 track multitrack's and have a result that came out this well.
