(14 Dec 1999) Natural Sound British Prime Minister Tony Blair has toured London's Millennium Dome and declared it an "incredible spectacle". After viewing the vast 90-foot-high sculptured figures of the Dome's Body Zone, the Prime Minister said the Dome would be "a success because it deserves to be a success". Calling it a triumph of "confidence over cynicism" Blair quashed rumours that the Dome would not be completed in time to host the celebrations this New Year's Eve, a mere nineteen days away. Mr Blair had travelled to the Dome in Greenwich, south east London, on the newly-opened Jubilee Line Extension, a direct transport link to the site in the south bank of the River Thames. Despite rumours that the Dome will not be completed in time for New Year's Eve, Tony Blair insisted that everything is on schedule and within budget. At the Dome, Mr Blair saw excerpts of the spectacular show that will take place several times a day in the Dome's central area. He met Matt Costain, 29, and Corinne Pierre, 23, who played the lovers in an allegorical story combining amazing aerial acrobatics with rock music in a tale of romance. Mr Blair spoke to workers still completing the giant Body Zone whose two "cuddling" reclining figures will be one of the first things that visitors see when they enter the vast structure. Mr Blair said the structure will not be torn down and will last for generations to come and remain a lasting asset for the country. The construction of the Dome has used no taxpayers' money and attracted a record-breaking 160 (m) million pounds sterling in private sponsorship. Construction contracts worth 300 (m) million pounds sterling have been awarded mainly to U-K firms, and an estimated 25-thousand jobs will be created locally in the next seven years Mr. Blair said there were already nine exciting options for its future, such as a cultural centre, a giant sports dome or a technology and education centre.
