Rue de la Tombe-Issoire is one of the oldest roads in the southern plains of the former suburbs of Paris, a term it owes to its location, which covers part of the ancient Gallo-Roman road linking Lutetia (Paris) to Cenabum (Orléans). It takes its name from the place called Tombe-Issoire, associated with the old legend of the giant Isoré, Isouard, Isoire, or Issoire, who is said to have once robbed travelers on the road to Orléans. This giant was caught and killed by William of Orange, or William of Gellone, or William of the Short Nose. William was unable to carry the body of this cumbersome giant away and cut off his head. The remaining body was buried on the spot. If this legend is based on a grain of truth, reported by the chronicler Richer of Reims of a battle of this kind which took place under the walls of Paris during the siege of 978 by Otto II, Jacques Hillairet indicates that another tradition attributes the name to the tomb of a bourgeois, named Isaure, buried at this place.
