문재인, 그는 누구인가? Moon Jae-in will officially be sworn in as South Korea's next president in the coming hours. Hwang Ho-jun help us get better acquainted with Moon, the man who will lead the country over the next five years. A best-selling author, human rights lawyer, a leader of the opposition party,... and now the newly elected President. The 64-year-old politician has held many titles through the years, but they haven't always been in politics. Moon Jae-in was born in 1953 in Geoje, Gyeongsangnam-do province, an island just off the coast of Busan, the eldest son of a refugee from North Korea. In the 70s, he was arrested and later expelled from college for organizing a protest against the authoritarian Park Jung-hee administration. While performing his mandatory military service, assigned to the special forces, he was part of the response team to the 1976 ax murder incident in the demilitarized zone. After the military, he became a human rights lawyer, which is where he met and befriended the late Roh Moo-hyun, who went on to become Korea's ninth President. Moon served as Roh's campaign manager and then as his presidential chief of staff. In 2012, Moon entered politics by winning a seat in the National Assembly representing Busan's Sasang-gu District as a member of the Democratic United Party. He was later nominated as the party's candidate in the 2012 presidential election but lost to Park Geun-hye. He then became the leader of the New Politics Alliance for Democracy in 2015. That ultimately prompted the departure of rival Ahn Cheol-soo... and the party to change its name to the Democratic Party of Korea, as it is known today. Starting Wednesday, Moon takes on a new role which he won on his second try -- President of the Republic of Korea. Hwang Hojun, Arirang News.
