October of 2024 was a historic month for weather in the city of Roswell. Residents received more than half of their annual precipitation within a six-hour period after relentless rain poured over the city. KRQE Chief Meteorologist Grant Tosterud and Meteorologist Josh Redwine explore the synoptic scale set up that led to over 5.78" worth of rainfall accumulating on October 19, which set a new record for the highest amount of precipitation recorded in a 24-hour period in Roswell's recorded history. The pair of scientists also dig through photos and video to show the magnitude of the flooding that took hold of streets and neighborhoods. KRQE Reporter Jessica Barron also gives New Mexican's a firsthand account of the damage and what it was like for residents during this once-in-a-century weather event. In this episode of Beyond the Forecast, Tosterud and Redwine also explain safety tips if anyone finds themselves in a life-threatening situation with heavy rainfall and flash flooding.
