Mangalore Cucumber Mandas is a traditional steamed dish from the coastal region of Mangalore, Karnataka. Though it is prepared using cucumber, the dish is named after its place of origin rather than the vegetable itself. Fresh cucumber is grated and mixed with rice rava or ground rice, grated coconut, jaggery, and a pinch of salt to form a mildly sweet batter. The mixture is shaped into small portions and steamed until soft and fluffy. The steaming process gives Mandas a moist texture and delicate flavor. This dish is light, nutritious, and easy to digest, making it a popular breakfast or snack, especially during the monsoon season. It is commonly prepared in Mangalorean households and served warm.
